Wastewater Expert Witness Testifies In Elk River Probe

Wastewater expert witness Fred Stottlemyer testified regarding the West Virginia Public Service Commission’s investigation into the January 9, 2014 Freedom Industries chemical spill.  The spill from the West Virginia American Water intake and treatment and distribution center occurred when crude MCHM was released into the Elk River.

Stottlemyer, former Director and Officer of the National Rural Water Association, oversaw a tenfold increase in water and wastewater service facilities during his career and is now with Emergent Engineers.  He testified that Freedom Industries’ “decision in 2004 to remove upstream monitoring and chemical testing equipment from its Kanawha Valley Treatment Plant limited its ability to respond effectively to the spill.”
