Surgery Expert Witness On Robotic Surgery

An article on the Connecticut law firm Tooher Wocl & Leydon LLC website discusses the benefits and disadvantages of robotic surgery.  The article gives an account of medical expert Dr. Makary and his  Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine team conducting a study on robot assisted surgery. They found that while many hospitals assert that robotic surgery causes less pain, scarring, bleeding and the time patients spend in recovery, the same hospitals did not inform the public about the potential problems associated with this type of surgery, including the lengthy time robotic surgery takes which keeps patients under anesthesia longer, and how it tends to cost more. Dr. Makary cautions that hospitals ignoring potential downfalls and jumping on the new technology may potentially putting patients at risk and open up possible medical malpractice lawsuits.
