Reproductive Endocrinology Expert Witnesses

Reproductive endocrinology expert witnesses may report and testify on infertility, recurrent pregnancy losses, gynecologic cancer, and related reproductive system problems.  In the news, 51 women have diethylstilbestrol (DES) lawsuits pending in Boston against more than a dozen drug companies.  Plaintiffs argue that the pregnancy drug caused an increased rate of breast cancer in the daughters of women who took the drug in the 1950s.  Four of the plaintiffs, the Melnick sisters, have had breast cancer, miscarriages, fertility problems, and/or other reproductive system problems.

The synthetic estrogen DES was prescribed to pregnant women between 1940 and 1971 to prevent miscarriage, premature labor, and related complications of pregnancy. Several studies have found increased risks of premature birth, miscarriage, and  ectopic pregnancy associated with DES exposure. The drug was taken off the market after being linked to a rare vaginal cancer. Studies of the grandchildren of these women are just beginning. DES was not effective in preventing miscarriages.
