New Michigan Court Rules

The Michigan State Supreme Court has announced new trial rules effective in September. Jurors will now be able to talk among themselves before the end of a civil case — that won’t be applied to criminal cases and all jurors must be present. The court is also encouraging judges to allow juries to ask questions of witnesses in civil cases with pre-written questions approved by both sides in a case — something already legal on the criminal side.  The rules would also allow judges to schedule expert witnesses in a way that assists jurors’ understanding of the issues.
