Memphis Company Trains Nurses To Be Medical Witnesses

Surgery, Operations RoomSince 2006, Elizabeth Rudolph has been teaching nurses to become expert medical witnesses in court cases through her Memphis, TN, company, Jurex LLC. She launched a program for doctors in January.  “(Jurex classes) have been a great eye-opener for nurses because they can expand their business by using the skills they already have coupled with what they get in a Jurex class,” Rudolph said. “There are a lot of medical malpractice cases filed every day, and personal injury cases like auto accidents or slips or falls.”  Rudolph is a Vanderbilt University-trained nurse and attorney

The most recent figures from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance show there were 8,934 medical malpractice claims either closed or pending in Tennessee at the end of 2008. That figure is up from the 8,584 reported in 2007.  Fees paid to expert witnesses in Tennessee medical malpractice cases alone totaled $16.2 million in 2008.
