Medical Negligence Expert Witnesses

What types of cases may the medical negligence expert witness opine on?  These experts may consult and testify on medical errors, negligence in hospitals, medical malpractice, and medical liability.  In Madison County Circuit Court, Lauren K. Reed filed a negligence lawsuit against Southwestern Illinois Health Facilities, (2014L 000823).  Reed alleges that her son was deprived of adequate oxygen which resulted in brain injury. She is requesting $500,000. The Madison County Circuit Court website states that a judge has not been assigned as of 7/6/14.

The Birth Hypoxia Advocacy Network explains the disorder:

Birth hypoxia is known by many other names, like birth asphyxia, intrauterine hypoxia, perinatal asphyxia, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy , neonatal asphyxia, neonatal encephalopathy, cerebral hypoxia, and asphyxia neonatorum.  The disorder is characterized by a lack of oxygen during the time of a child’s birth.  This lack of oxygen can lead to serious health problems very quickly, a baby could suffer permanent brain damage from mere seconds without air.
