Medical Expert Testifies Re: Inmate Death

GavelThe criminal trial of Lucas County, OH, Sheriff James Telb and three former or current sheriff’s office employees resumes Nov. 30.  The defendants are charged with crimes associated with the 2004 death of inmate Carlton Benton, 25.  Sergeant Gray, who retired in June, 2004, is charged with applying a “sleeper hold” that allegedly triggered Mr. Benton’s death.  The sheriff and Captain McBroom, who conducted the 2004 internal affairs investigation of the death, are charged with covering up a felony and providing false information to the FBI. Deputy Schmeltz is charged with falsifying reports, pushing a shackled Mr. Benton, resulting in a fall, and providing false information to the FBI.

A medical expert for the defense spent several hours on the stand analyzing Carlton Benton’s medical records.  The expert testified inmate Carlton Benton nearly died in the hospital before he was released and taken back to the jail.
