Today, Deborah A.P. Hersman, NTSB chair, says the September 9, 2010, pipeline explosion that killed eight and destroyed 28 homes in San Bruno, CA, “is the story of flawed pipe, flawed inspection and flawed emergency response. It was not a question of if the pipe would fail, but when.”

Engineering experts have closely followed the San Bruno explosion in regards to the safety of potentially fatigued pipelines in close proximity to residential areas.
