Cell Phone Technology Expert Testifies in RICO Trial

forensics_ediscoveryTechnology experts are called upon to report and testify on data retrieved from cellular communications as well as computers. Cell phone technology expert witness Supervisor Special Agent Jason Warren testified for the prosecution in the federal RICO trial related to the slaying of Waynesboro, Virginia, reserve police Capt. Kevin Quick. A member of the FBI Cellular Analysis Survey Team, the expert described how cellphones are used to track a user’s location.

Special Agent Warren was able to analyze hundreds of text messages, phone calls, emails, Facebook posts and Internet searches sent and received by the six defendants. They include: Daniel Mathis, Shantai Shelton, Mersadies Shelton, and Kweli Uhuru who are charged with murder. Gert Wright and Anthony Stokes are charged with obstruction of justice and racketeering.

Forensic experts discover and preserve evidence so that it becomes admissible in court. They may testify on the retrieval of data from cell phones, social media, and other electronic sources. In this criminal case, forensic investigation by Special Agent Warren revealed a great deal of information damaging to the defendants and instrumental to the prosecution.
