Reproductive endocrinology expert witnesses may report and testify on infertility, recurrent pregnancy losses, gynecologic cancer, and related reproductive system problems. In the news, 51 women have diethylstilbestrol (DES) lawsuits pending in Boston against more than a dozen drug companies. Plaintiffs argue that the pregnancy drug caused an increased rate of breast cancer in the daughters of women who took the drug in the 1950s. Four of the plaintiffs, the Melnick sisters, have had breast cancer, miscarriages, fertility problems, and/or other reproductive system problems.

A Pennsylvania appeals court has upheld a jury award of more than $10 million in a Prempro breast cancer lawsuit, reversing a lower court’s ruling that overturned the award of compensatory and punitive damages in the case. The hormone replacement therapy (HRT) lawsuit was originally won in 2007 by Mary Daniel, who claimed that Prempro treatments caused her to develop breast cancer.

A University of California researcher says that the findings of a new study provide proof that zinc-based Zicam nasal products, which were recalled last year, may cause some people to lose their sense of smell. The research was published in this month’s issue of the medical journal Archives of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Dr. Terence M. Davidson, who has served as an expert witness in litigation involving zinc nasal gels, authored the study which is the first to find a causal link between Zicam and loss of smell, a condition known as anosmia

Public Health Experts Testify At Hearing On Antibiotics in Animals

Veterinarians, professionals in human and animal medicine, government officials, drug industry representatives and researchers came together yesterday at a hearing put on by the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health to discuss the use of antibiotics in animals. Christine Hoang, DVM, assistant director of the Scientific Activities Division at the American Veterinary Medical Association, testified yesterday in support of judicious use of antimicrobials in food animals but cautioned against federal bans. Such bans can have far-reaching impacts on both animal and human health, she said.

Economic Damages Expert Testifies In Hepatitis Case

Jury deliberations resumed this week in the case of Henry Chanin who is suing drug companies after contracting hepatitis C at a Las Vegas endoscopy clinic. The lawsuit claims Teva Parenteral Medicines Inc. and Baxter Healthcare Corp. are liable on several product defect claims. The two companies made and distributed, the anesthetic propofol used at Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center, where Chanin was infected with hepatitis C during a routine procedure in 2006.
