Kimmel wrote that one of the two independent studies which purportedly showed Zoloft increases the risk of heart defects in newborns contained incorrect data. Dr. Kimmel is Director of Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the Penn Cardiovascular Institute.

Plaintiffs suing Pfizer Inc over its antidepressant drug Zoloft will have until mid-June to find a new pharmacology expert witness to testify that the drug can cause birth defects. This comes after a St. Louis jury held that the medication did not cause heart abnormalities in Logyn Pesante. His family was seeking over $2.7M for medical costs and recompense for his physical defects. The company faces over 1000 similar suits in federal and state courts.

Medical Expert Witness Testifies In Case Against Aaron Hernandez

Medical expert witness Dr. William Zane, of the Massachusetts state medical examiner’s office, testified regarding bullet wounds in the murder trial of former New England Patriots Aaron Hernandez. The jury is in deliberation after closing arguments in the death of Odin Lloyd. A pharmaceutical expert witness testified for the defense on the effects of PCP. Hernandez’s legal team presented the argument that two men who were with Hernandez, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, killed Lloyd while under the influence of PCP.

The judge presiding over the Zoloft MDL in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania granted the plaintiffs group’s motion to present a new causation analysis expert witness last month. Although marketed as safe during pregnancy, hundreds of plaintiffs have filed lawsuits over birth defects. Use of the antidepressant during pregnancy has been linked to a serious lung condition that can prevent an infant from getting enough oxygen. Injurylawyer-news.com writes that additional birth complications include “apnea, seizures, heart defects, difficulty feeding, irritability, trouble regulating body temperature, autism, and malformations of the skull or brain.”

Pharmacist Glenn Adam Chin is in the news declaring that he is not guilty of knowingly shipping 17,000 vials of the tainted steroid methylprednisolone acetate. The resulting meningitis outbreak killed 64 people. Chin worked for The New England Compounding Center which is now bankrupt.
